Benefits of Coenzyme Q-10Coenzyme Q-10 – also known as Co Q-10 – is an antioxidant that appears in almost every cell in the body and helps fight free radicals. The benefits of CoQ10 are plentiful, especially as found naturally in the energy-producing cells of the heart. CoQ10 has been shown to support the cardiovascular system, providing powerful antioxidant support for healthy heart and promote circulation through myocardial tissue.
CoQ10 plays a role in the body’s production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the basic energy component of the human cell. CoQ10 is essential for energy production of almost every cell in the body, including helping the body convert food to energy. A dose of at least 360 mg per day, CoQ10 may also prove to be important for cognitive function and nervous system health.
Coenzyme Q-10 promotes the recycling of Vitamin E in the body and can be absorbed in the outer layers of skin to provide its beneficial properties. As a supplement, CoQ10 is often provided in softgel form to boost the absorption of CoQ10.
Although Co Q-10 is naturally found in every cell of the human body, scientific studies indicate that CoQ10 levels tend to decrease as we age. The Statin taking medication for their cholesterol should be especially aware of how much CoQ10 they are getting from their diets, since Statins can reduce CoQ10 levels in the body.1 One study found that eight of the nine controlled statin trials resulted significant depletions of Co Q-10 levels.2 Therefore, the benefits of CoQ10 in supplement form can be especially important for Statin drug users.
