A massage therapist uses ‘Strokes’ and ‘pressure’ as massage. Effleurage, Petrissage, percussion, friction and vibration are 5 different strokes used while massaging.
Effleurage strokes are long, gliding and soothing. These beats are made with hands flat surface. Effleurage strokes increase circulation and depth of relaxation.
Petrissage resemble kneading strokes. These strokes, massage is recommended for children and the elderly. The skin and superficial muscles are laminated or pressure, gently but firmly grasping between thumb and fingers.
Percussion is done with both hands. In this stroke both hands move quickly and alternately stimulate the muscles. Rhythm can be done with finger tips (recording), cuts the movement of fingers stretched (hacking), cupped hands (cupping) opened flat palms (slapping), and using both fists (pounding) .
These masaj strokes are used to treat joints and surrounding areas. Friction breaks adhesions, remove wastes and cleaning of congestion. Long, slow, firm strokes or circular hand movements are used to move the most superficial tissues of the deep underlying tissues.
These masaj strokes stimulate nerves. Hands or fingers move forward and backwards quickly into the soft tissues to shake. The vibrations are used in the buttocks, thighs, upper back, etc.
Mild, moderate or strong pressure is applied during massage, depending on the piece to massage and massage objective.
