How Stress Causes AcneThe field of medicine has long been divided on whether stress is a cause of acne or not. Recently, however, there have been a number of clinical medical studies showing that stress is directly related to your acne.
Stanford University conducted a small study in 2002, with the participation of 22 students who suffer from acne.
There are two ways that stress worsens acne. The first way is to stimulate the adrenal glands to produce more hormones. Hormones are an important factor in the formation of acne, why teenagers are the most affected by acne breakouts. The adrenal glands secrete hormones that produce more sebum, which ultimately lead to the formation of acne. The second way that stress worsens acne is by slowing the healing process. It has been shown that the healing ability of the immune system can be decreased by 40 during periods of high stress.
Stress affects the skin in other ways besides acne. Stress also causes the adrenal glands to overproduce cortisol causes the sebaceous glands produce more oil and makes your skin very oily. This is one reason why instead of just the usual blackhead or Whitehead is usually associated with acne, pus filled bumps you get are more inflamed when under stress.
Positive and negative stress has the same effect in body chemistry. So if you are stressed about getting married soon, which would be positive stress, or stress over how to pay the bills, negative stress, the results are the same when it comes to acne.
Try to find ways to reduce your stress levels, such as diet and exercise. This should help reduce related stress acne formation.
